Greetings!
This is my final letter as president of PRSA-LA. While most presidents serve for one year, I had the unusual opportunity to serve for two. I'm grateful for this extra time because it enabled me to fulfill several key goals, such as increasing diversity and creating a clear path for members to pursue chapter leadership.
I'm pleased to report that 11 very active committees have been established over the past two years to provide members with a range of new leadership opportunities. We also made significant progress in terms of increasing diversity on the board of directors and in our various committees. We made sure that PRSA-LA event speakers represented a cross section of our profession, and we developed several joint initiatives with HPRA (the Hispanic Public Relations Association) and other community groups. While there's still much work to do in this regard, we have instilled front-of-mind awareness for the need to build diversity at every level.
Despite the economic downturn, PRSA-LA added nearly 100 new members this year! We kept event fees at 2004 levels to help ensure a consistently high number of attendees. We also saw a record number of PRism Award entries. In addition, this year's "Quality Time With PR Minds" event drew the largest ever group of PR professionals eager to donate their time to help worthy non-profits.
None of this could have been accomplished without our dedicated board of directors. They are some of the finest thought leaders in the industry. They're also a fun bunch of people, many of whom have become personal friends. I thank them from the bottom of my heart for their commitment, support and leadership. I also thank our Executive Director, Barbara Shore, who with 39 years of service is the unfaltering glue that holds our chapter together. She has been my safety net and mentor for the past two years.
I'm happy to pass the leadership baton to Eric Moses, your 2010 president, and I hope that he finds the experience as rewarding and enjoyable as I have over the past two years. Thank you and happy holidays!

Member Milestones
Myers Runs for the Record!
For the fourth consecutive year, 91 year-old Julian Myers, APR has dominated track and field events at the Huntsman World Senior Games in St. George, Utah.
The entertainment PR icon participated in six marquee events while competing against seniors from around the world. He came in first in the long jump, javelin and 3,000 meter run, for which he holds the record for men 85 and older. As for the other three events (the 50, 200 and 800 meter races), Julian came in a strong second.
Julian approaches the games like a man on a mission, and credits his stamina to competing in the name of AmigoDay - a project he co-founded with his wife to encourage people to devote the first Sunday of every month to forming new friendships. He has completed 25 marathons all over the world, and plans to run the 2010 L.A. Marathon on March 31st.

Making the Grade
Pepperdine's Revitalized PRSSA Chapter Gives Students a Head Start
Over the past year, the previously defunct Pepperdine University chapter of PRSSA (the Public Relations Student Society of America) has grown to become one of the most active and dynamic chapters in the nation.
It currently boasts more than 40 members, a monthly newsletter and a student-run PR firm called ExPRess PR, which provides pro-bono services to local non-profits. Rachel Friedman, the chapter's president and PR firm director, launched the agency to help students gain hands-on experience while providing a service to the community.
The chapter has also begun hosting a range of events to build stronger ties with PRSA-LA and the PR industry at-large. Once such event was a recent speed networking session that matched 12 senior PR pros with Pepperdine students eager to network and practice their elevator pitch.
More information about the Pepperdine PRSSA chapter is available on the chapter Web site.
