A USC graduate, Furtney received one of the university’s first three degrees in public relations (June 1960) and attended Menlo College, Atherton, Calif.
Furtney began his communications career as a reporter for the Santa Ana (now Orange County) Register. In 1965, he joined Getty Oil Co., Los Angeles, as editor of employee communications and began a corporate public relations career that included Kaiser Corp. (1967-68); Chevron Corp. (1968-77); Natomas Co. (1977-82); Sprint Corp. (1984-91) and Union Pacific Railroad and its predecessor, Southern Pacific Rail Corp. (1991-2003).
Furtney joined PRSA’s Los Angeles chapter in 1967, and has also been a member of PRSA chapters in San Francisco, Sacramento, Denver, Washington, D.C. and Kansas City. He was accredited in 1976 and was elected to the College of Fellows in 2003. A native of Taft, Calif., Furtney is a fourth generation Californian and serves as a director of the California State Rail Museum Foundation. He is a life member of the San Francisco Public Relations Round Table.
